The jet age started during the end of world war II. Early classic jets such as the Meteor, Vampire and Sabre vied with the famous Messerschmitt Me262. Classic jets of the 50s such as the graceful Hawker Hunter and MIG 15/17’s still make a thrilling spectacle and have great charm and presence in the sky. The transition from piston power to jet power brought much higher speeds and saw the introduction of missiles as aerial warfare moved from close combat dogfighting to high speed chases and the use of automated systems. Flown in active service for 30-40 years, nowadays these jets are a welcome but rare sight at airshows.
